21CLHK & AIS HK
Two weeks ago I had the opportunity to travel to Hong Kong to attend the 21st Century Learning (21CLHK) Conference. I found the conference to be very good quality with many opportunities to learn about current best practice and research, to network with old colleagues and meet with a range of vendors. My main focus for attending the event was to join as many Makerspace and STEM sessions as I could as these are two areas we are looking to grow at AIS in 2025 and beyond. I also attended a number of leadership panels and also met with staff from the Wellbeing Distillery which grew out of Caulfield Grammar School in Victoria to be one of the world leaders in well-being.
While in Hong Kong I took the opportunity to visit the Australian International School. I spent a couple of hours touring the school and meeting with their High School Principal, Mr Peter Phillips. It is always a great learning opportunity to visit other top quality international schools and to meet with their leaders.

NAPLAN
The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. This year it will take place here in Jakarta from Monday 24th - Thursday 28th March (last week of Term 1 = Week 9).
NAPLAN is a nationwide measure through which parents/carers, teachers, schools, education authorities, governments and the broader community can determine whether or not young Australians are developing the literacy and numeracy skills that provide the critical foundation for other learning and for their productive NAPLAN tests are one aspect of each school’s assessment and reporting process and do not replace the extensive, ongoing assessments made by teachers about each student’s performance. Each teacher will have the best insight into their students’ educational progress. Parents/carers can use NAPLAN reports, along with other school assessment reports, to discuss their child’s strengths and areas for improvement with their teacher.
NAPLAN results do not measure overall school quality.
NAPLAN is made up of tests in the 4 areas of:
reading
writing
conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation)
Numeracy.
NAPLAN results allow parents/carers and educators to see how students are progressing in literacy and numeracy over time – individually, as part of their school community, and against national standards.
The tests support monitoring and evaluating the performance of schools and school systems in these fundamental capabilities. They also provide schools, states and territories with information about how education approaches are working, areas to be prioritised for improvement, and those schools requiring support in the teaching and learning of literacy and numeracy.
The best preparation for NAPLAN is teaching and learning the curriculum. Children can be reassured that NAPLAN tests are just one part of their school program, and they should simply do the best they can on the day.
If you would like to see the types of questions in a NAPLAN test, visit the NAPLAN public demonstration site.
